The Franklin County Humane Society and County citizens spent a great deal of effort and money to build a new shelter at a new address with different hours. With the tremendous influx of animals to county shelters, euthanasia has to occur, but with the help of many other groups and individuals, close to 1000 dogs and cats were saved in 2007. Franklin County really has improved its care of animals in county custody and deserves the credit. Animals are kept as long as possible, not just the three days mandated by law for strays. Owner surrrenders are not euthanized immediately. Over three years ago the County moved to euthanizing by lethal injection performed by a licensed veterinarian and then only after the animal is first sedated. Franklin County has a new, larger, and thoroughly modern shelter, built over a year ago, which is located at 351 T. Kemp Road, Louisburg, NC 27549. There are quarantine areas, separate areas for puppies, small dogs, kittens, larger dogs and cats. There are visitation rooms where potential adopters may take their new prospective family members to get to know them and a fenced in area for walking. Contact InformationIf you have a question about the status of any animals at the facility or need to retrieve a lost pet, call 919-496-3032 or Fax 919-496-4876 or email the director at gstallings@franklincountync.us or an animal control officer at kjohnson@franklincountync.us Rescues requiring assistance to remove a pet from the facility should call Julie at 919-990-1046. Opening Hours The expanded hours of operations are Monday - Friday 8am to 5pm and Saturday 10am - 2pm. Drop-offs and adoptions are Monday - Friday 10am to 4pm and Saturday 10am - 2pm. Adoption Information The cost to adopt a dog or cat is $25, which includes a rabies shot for animals old enough, and a deposit of $50, refundable upon proof of spay or neuter. The County, in conjunction with the Humane Society, has instituted several low-cost spay/neuter programs, some aimed at animals rescued from the shelter, others available to any individual with low income. Prices are accurate on August 25th 2009. The Franklin County Humane Society pulls exclusively from the shelter, fostering in their homes, and works hard to rescue and place as many dogs and cats as possible. Click here for Dogs and Cats Needing Homes at Franklin County Animal Control Franklin County Humane Society volunteers take pictures of all adoptable animals and place them on the Petfinder website twice each week. This has lead to numerous adoptions and reunions of owners and lost pets. Franklin County Animal Shelter 351 T.
