House Trained: Yes
Children: Seems OK though as with all dogs an adult should be there with
younger children to supervise. Merv has been in contact with our grand
children (1 and 3 years), he is quite happy to play with them and his ball though
he can get a bit boisterous!
Other Dogs: No problems, he is not aggressive and is quite happy when he
comes into contact with other dogs, mostly he just wants to play but is
still controllable.
Cats: Shows a healthy interest when out for a walk!
Travelling: OK in cars though needs to be secured.
Lead: He does pull slightly on a short lead but with training he
will learn to stay close. We train him on a 10 meter lead which he
finds more fun and has a good run around.
Off Lead: He will go off and do his own thing, mud flats in Holes Bay for
instance! He does come back once you tell him you are going and walk
away. More off the lead training is required and should only be done when there are no
other dogs around, no roads Etc, as he is easily distracted.
Hates: The current M&S Christmas advert - as soon as it starts he is
barking!
Notes: Merv was very possessive when he first arrived but with some one to
one activities he has learnt that if you take his ball he will get it back
in the end. He has a full understanding of basic commands such as "sit",
"down", "off", "leave", "no", "close" and "back" - we have been using a
clicker and whistle which he seems to respond to. No signs of food
aggression, he will sit when his food is put down and waits to be told
before eating. No adverse reaction to vacuum cleaners or household appliances though
the lawn mower was another matter!
Merv loves contact but will also settle down next to the radiator. He will
take a period of time to settle into a routine but once this period is over
you get to see the real Merv. He is a dog with a lot to offer, can be affectionate
when he wants to be but certainly one that will be loyal in exchange for
food, walks and love. He would suit someone who wants a companion or a friend for a young
family.
