The Rappahannock Humane Society is no longer operatingRappahannock Humane Society is a non-profit organization incorporated on June 27th, 1997. RHS is dedicated to animal rescue and placement and to providing for the special needs of abused and traumatized animals in the Rappahannock, Virginia area, encompassing Fredericksburg, Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, and Caroline counties. Our mission is public education of animal overpopulation statistics, the reduction of the overpopulation of animals by aggressively advocating spaying and neutering, the elimination of the general acceptance of euthanasia as a means of population control, and the prevention of cruel and inhumane treatment of animals. The RHS is a registered 501(c) and all contributions are tax deductible. There is no payroll or other expenses and all donations go directly to the care of the animals. AdoptionsAdoptions of domestic rescues include a homesite, a contract, vet references, a non-negotiable no-declaw policy; and, we have a return policy as part of our adoption contract to ensure that no animal will be placed in a shelter. Further, our animals are completely vetted. Every feline we assist is tested. We can provide a reference from our animal hospital upon request. Canine rescues must be placed in homes with fencing. The Rappahannock Humane Society adoption fee matches our local animal shelter. Our primary focus is to place our adopted animals with the best possible homes. We do require a home visit and that you sign a contract stating you will have the animal spayed or neutered, and that you will not declaw cats, nor will they be allowed outside. References from our growing family are eagerly provided. We invite you to visit our list of cats and dogs ready for adoption. The Stray Cat Project We are a small group of volunteers who also work with feral colonies. We have 9 years of experience with strays and ferals. The Stray Cat Project is an ongoing initiative wherein we place strays/ferals, that are at risk, on farms. In order to comply with State law, we provide assistance with TNR (Trap, Neuter, and Return) when there exists an owner/caretaker of a colony of feral cats. However, we do not endorse the release of ferals to their colonies the morning after surgery. We recoup our sterilized ferals for several days as we have experienced ferals with hernias, mastitis, abcesses, or other injuries. The project e-mail address is StrayCatProject@rhspetnet.org Visit Us All animals that RHS rescues are kept in a foster environment and are not crated, except for health reasons, and then for the shortest possible time. We do not have a "store front" so to visit with an animal, please contact the foster parent to arrange a time. We do participate in Adoption Days at PetSmart, but e-mail RHS@rhspetnet.org for the schedule. The primary focus is the field work, and an animal in need will pre-empt any scheduled activities.
